And given KROX20’s importance for hair follicle development, it’s in our best interest to avoid a zinc deficiency so that KROX20 can keep doing its job of maintaining our hair. […]

No longer using shampoos and conditioners turned out to be a great decision for me, too. Been going shampoo-free for almost 3 months now and I don’t miss it at all. My scalp feels great and my hair never gets greasy. I still get quite a bit dandruff after the scalp massages, though.

Hey Ivan,

It’s tough to say, but increased dandruff doesn’t always mean that you’re about to lose your hair. In many cases, increased dandruff is just simply related to diet (for instance, reduced intake of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K). I think you should do some troubleshooting before grabbing for an anti-dandruff shampoo — as that kind of shampoo resolves on the symptoms of dandruff and not the actual cause. For more information, I wrote this post a few years back:

Best,
Rob

Do you think dandruff is somehow related to hair loss or a sign of impending hair loss?

I’m currently in the process of growing out my hair, have no hair loss but I’m noticing that the skin under my hair (scalp) is super flaky and when I scratch the skin, little flakes fall off.

I’m a little concerned because I’ve heard that dandruff is a sign of inflammation and from this website I know that chronic inflammation is a serious risk factor for hair loss, calcification, etc.

I barely get any itching during the day and I don’t really notice it in the mirror unless I pull my hair up and expose the scalp underneath.

Do you think this is a serious issue and I should use anti-dandruff shampoo or can I just ignore this?

Thank you.

Ivan

Thanks Rog. And I totally agree. I’ve seen the website to which you’re referring, and it’s ridiculous just how much they exaggerate the claims on PGD2 and position it as a hair loss miracle cure. I wrote an article about this not too long ago:

https://perfecthairhealth.com/prostaglandin-d2-miracle-hair-loss-discovery-or-just-another-sign-of-inflammation/

The bottom line: it’s unclear if PGD2 is a root cause of hair loss. More evidence seems to suggest that PGD2 is just a symptom of inflammation, and while it’s androgen-mediated, it might not be the cause of hair loss, but rather just one of the many other biomarkers elevated in a balding scalp.
